Cricket in Indonesia
Cricket is a minor sport in Indonesia. Although the sport has been played in the country since the 1880s, the national governing body, Cricket Indonesia, was only formed in 2000. It gained membership of the International Cricket Council (ICC) the following year, and the Indonesian national team made its debut in 2002.
Cricket was introduced to colonial Indonesia (the Dutch East Indies) in the early 1880s, by Dutch workers. The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa was reported to have interrupted a match being played in Batavia (present-day Jakarta), by the members of the Bataviasche Cricket Club.〔Antony Sutton (18 May 2015). Cricket and association football were introduced to the country around the same time, and many of the early clubs played both sports. The recent history of cricket in Indonesia began in 1981, when the International Sports Club of Indonesia established a cricket section.
